Continuing Professional Development

A key feature of the Division’s support to general practice is providing high quality Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for GPs.  All CPD activities are endorsed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine.

CPD activities take place monthly and are held either as an evening dinner meeting, or a day-long weekend workshop at various quality venues throughout the Adelaide Hills.  Activities are designed to provide GPs with opportunities to increase their skills and knowledge in a range of topics, through various interactive learning modes, including:

  • specialist guest speaker presentations with ‘question & answer’ sessions
  • expert panel discussions
  • peer interactive case study discussions
  • hands-on workshops where appropriate

CPD activities provide the added benefit of peer support and networking with other GPs and allied health professionals working in the region.

The annual CPD calendar supports the various program areas undertaken by the Division and addresses topics identified as local and national health priorities, as well as topics identified by GPs through needs assessment surveys and ongoing feedback.

For further queries, feedback or to register for a CPD activity, contact Alice Windle  8406 7729 or Dianne Millard 8406 7713.

Free online learning for RACGP is available at: www.gplearning.com.au

Rural Health Education Foundation has a range of television-based health education that can be viewed online at: www.rhef.com.au

Training Grants

A number of grants are available to assist GPs with the costs of meeting their CPD requirements through the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency.  For rural GPs who provide emergency and/ or procedural services (obstetrics, anaesthetics, surgery) upskilling grants are available through the Training for Rural and Remote Procedural General Practitioners Program

GP Obstetric Shared Care (SA) Program
South Australia has offered a state wide Obstetric Shared Care model since 2003. In October 2009 GP partners Adelaide was awarded the contract to manage the GP OSC (SA) Program on behalf of SA Health.

The aim of the GP Obstetric Shared Care (SA) Program (GP OSC SA) is to increase choices and options for pregnancy care for women and to provide continuity of care.  In this model, the GP provides most of the antenatal and postnatal care, while the public hospital staff provides inpatient and some outpatient obstetric care.

Entry into an obstetric shared care arrangement should be recommended for all low risk women with access to an accredited GP and a participating public hospital.

OSC accredited GPs work collaboratively with a Specialist Obstetrician or a GP Obstetrician to facilitate shared antenatal and postnatal care for women who wish to deliver in a public hospital.

All GPs who wish to practice Obstetric Shared Care in SA are required to be accredited with the GP OSC (SA) program and be familiar with the policies of the participating hospital. Accreditation is dependent on the demonstration of satisfactory antenatal care experience and successful completion of an OSC Accreditation Seminar as a category 1 event.

For the GP OSC (SA) Program GP partners Adelaide is required to maintain an up to date list of OSC accredited GPs, maintain updated OSC Protocols, monitor adherence to the OSC protocols and arrange suitable Accreditation seminars and ongoing CPD updates for OSC GPs.

For more information about the program, how to become accredited, the latest OSC Protocols, to ask about the register of OSC accredited GP’s, Newsletters, CPD events and a range of useful contacts and resources, please visit the GP partners Adelaide website www.gppadelaide.org.au or contact GP partners Adelaide on Ph: 8112 1120.
